In-Vitro Fertilization
In-vitro fertilization also known as IVF, is one of the assisted reproductive techniques which involves retrieving matured eggs from a woman’s Ovary and fertilizing them with sperm cells, this procedure is done in the reproductive laboratory. The resulting fertilized eggs known as embryos are then transferred to the woman’s uterus.
The IVF Treatment process is tailored to mimic the natural process of conception and can be summarized in these five steps.
Stimulation: This empowers the woman to have more eggs than the regular number of eggs she usually produced in a natural cycle. Fertility medication will be administered both orally and via Injections while undergoing regular ultrasounds to monitor the growth of the eggs and the ideal time of retrieval.
Egg Retrieval: this is a minor surgical procedure performed under anaesthesia to retrieve the mature eggs from the ovaries of the woman.
Insemination
Sperm cells from a well-sorted semen sample from the male partner are used to fertilize the retrieved eggs in the laboratory by an Embryologist. The type of insemination method used is determined by the peculiarity of the male partner seminal fluid analysis result (SFA ) such a method could be conventional IVF or Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).
