Effect Of Lemon Juice On Reproductive Hormones
This has necessitated research on how lemon juice can affect the hormones that control reproduction. The study examined the impact of lemon juice on female Wistar rats’ reproductive hormones.
Twenty female Wistar rats received intraperitoneal doses of freshly made lemon juice (Citrus limon) ranging from 0.41 g/ml to 6.5 g/ml (200-300 g).
The Kaabar Arithmetic approach was used to conduct acute toxicity studies. LD 50 was found to be 2.13 g/ml for LD 50 ip.
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) serum levels were statistically dose-dependently reduced by lemon juice from 3.68 0.1 units to 0.6 units and 5.63 units to 1.2 units, respectively.
On the other hand, the levels of the other hormones were modest or unaffected by lemon juice (estradiol, progesterone, and prolactin).
The decrease in these hormones’ levels (FSH & LH) raises the possibility that it works as a contraceptive.
