Importance of blastocyst in IVF

What is A Blastocyst?

A cluster of dividing cells called a blastocyst is produced by a fertilized egg. It’s an embryo in its early stages. A blastocyst is merely one of several steps that lead to pregnancy.

About five to six days after a sperm fertilizes an egg, a blastocyst develops. The blastocyst’s cell layers divide and separate.

They eventually develop into the structures that safeguard and support the growing fetus (unborn baby).

For in vitro fertilization, the blastocyst stage of a fertilized egg is particularly crucial (IVF). The procedure of producing an embryo outside of the body of the expectant parent is known as in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Development Of Blastocyst

  • The blastocyst usually forms on day 5 as fluid builds within the compacted morula
  • A healthy blastocyst often begins hatching from its outer shell, called the zona pellucida between day 5 to day 7 after fertilization
  • Within 24 hours after hatching, embryo implantation after IVF (or a “natural” pregnancy) begins as the embryo invades the uterine lining
  • The blastocyst releases HCG hormone (the pregnancy test hormone) which leaks into the mother’s blood as the embryo implants

Functions Of Blastocyst

The blastocyst stage is crucial in the development of the embryo and fetus. Pregnancy won’t happen if the blastocyst doesn’t implant in the woman’s endometrium.

Hormones cause a process known as hatching, which is necessary for implantation to take place. The clear outer membrane of the blastocyst is lost. One to three days after a blastocyst reaches the uterus, the egg will hatch.

The blastocyst’s outer layer cells then fuse with their endometrium’s outer layer. They expel a gooey protein called L-selectin that interacts with elements in their endometrium.

The fetus finally develops from these outer cells.

In their endometrium, the blastocyst’s inner layer of cells implants more deeply. These cells develop into the placenta, which supplies the growing fetus with nourishment and oxygen.

The amniotic sac is created by a portion of the placental cells.

The transparent, insulating fluid that surrounds the developing fetus is called amniotic fluid.

Importance of blastocyst in IVF

During IVF, medical professionals assess and rank blastocysts to identify which embryos have the best chance of developing into a pregnancy.

Blastocysts are best for IVF transfers to your uterus five or six days following conception. The blastocysts may be ranked by medical professionals according to their density, cell quantity, form, and maturity.
